DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Superior National Forest has begun prescribed burns in a two million acre portion of the forest as weather and conditions allow.
The planned burns often have a narrow window of opportunity just before the spring green up of vegetation.
The prescribed fires help to reduce hazardous fuel buildup and the risk of more intense wildfires. They also improve and maintain forest health and wildlife habitat and eliminate invasive species.
The prescribed fires are continuously monitored for safety.
During active burning, some smoke and flames could be visible from roads and areas near the burn area.
Ignition days and times may be adjusted to avoid smoke in sensitive areas.
More information about prescribed fires can be found on the Superior National Forest website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/superior/home
