DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Minnesota Sea Grant has launched an enhanced version of their Minnesota Lakes Ice-Out Clock for 2025.
The online site will provide an estimate of when the chosen lake will be free of ice.
The search feature allows users to look up the ice-out forecast for specific lakes around the state.
The Ice Out Clock uses National Weather Service data, the size of the lake and seasonal snowfall trends to estimate when the ice is likely to leave that particular lake.
Although the site provides an estimate of when lakes will be ice free, they don’t indicate when ice is safe since conditions often change rapidly.
To use the Sea Grant Ice Out Clock, go to this website https://seagrant.umn.edu/programs/recreation-and-water-safety-program/mn-ice-out-clock and enter the county and lake to access the information.
